Frequently asked questions
Does quality improve when going from JPG to PNG?
No. The PNG stores the image as it is now, without losing anything more, but it does not bring back the detail the JPG discarded when it was created.
Why is the PNG larger than the JPG?
Because PNG compresses without discarding information. A photograph can be several times larger as a PNG than as a JPG; that is normal and not a sign of any error.
Will the background become transparent?
No. A JPG has no transparency and converting does not create it: a white background stays white. Removing a background takes an editing program.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion is done in your browser: this tool does not send the images to or store them on any server, and the new file does not keep the original’s metadata, such as the location.
What converting a JPG to PNG is for
Some platforms require PNG for certain files: icons, profile pictures, stamps, scanned signatures or assets for an app. It also makes sense if you are going to edit the image several times: every time a JPG is saved it loses a little quality, whereas a PNG can be opened and saved without limit.
Work in PNG while you edit and export to JPG only the final version if you need it to be small.
JPG and JPEG are the same thing
Both extensions refer to the same format. “.jpg” comes from older systems that limited extensions to three letters; “.jpeg” is the full name. You can convert files with either one.
