    Frequently asked questions

What happens to a PNG’s transparent background?

JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. If you need to keep the transparent background, convert to WebP instead of JPG.

How much smaller is the file?

It depends on the image. For a photograph saved as PNG, the JPG is usually five to ten times smaller. For a screenshot with few colours and a lot of text, the difference is smaller.

Is the loss of quality noticeable?

Not to the naked eye: it is saved at 92% quality. In screenshots with small text, very faint halos can appear around the letters; for that kind of image PNG is still the better format.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion is done in your browser: this tool does not send the images to or store them on any server, and the new file does not keep the original’s metadata, such as the location.

Why convert a PNG to JPG

PNG stores every pixel exactly, which is ideal for logos and screenshots but very costly for a photograph: a photo in PNG can take up 10 or 15 MB. The same content in JPG takes a fraction of that, because the format discards details the eye cannot tell apart.

It is the usual conversion when a form rejects the image for its size, when an email will not take such heavy attachments, or when a website or program only accepts JPG.

When it is better to keep the PNG

If the image has a transparent background and you need it, or if it is a graphic with text, thin lines or flat colours: there PNG looks cleaner and often is not even larger. Convert photos to JPG and leave graphics as PNG.
