Frequently asked questions
Why are the images I download WebP?
Because many websites serve their images as WebP: it is smaller and the page loads sooner. When you save the image, the browser downloads it in the format it received.
Is quality lost when converting to JPG?
Very little: it is saved at 92% quality, and the difference from the original WebP cannot be seen with the naked eye.
What if the WebP has transparency?
JPG does not support it, so transparent areas become white. If you need to keep it, convert to PNG.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion is done in your browser: this tool does not send the images to or store them on any server, and the new file does not keep the original’s metadata, such as the location.
Why convert a WebP to JPG
WebP is a format designed for the web, and outside the browser it does not always work: older versions of editing and office programs, some viewers, digital photo frames, TVs and many upload forms do not accept it.
JPG is the most widely supported image format there is. If you do not know what the person receiving the image will open it with, converting it to JPG avoids trouble.
JPG or PNG?
If the WebP is a photograph, JPG: it will be light and look the same. If it is a logo, an illustration with flat colours or an image with a transparent background, it is better to convert it to PNG, which keeps the transparency and the crisp edges.
